Leon didnât seek me out until the end of the school day when I was getting into my car. He almost gave me a heart attack when he suddenly stood behind me.
âHi,â he said with a forced grin.
I lifted my hand in greeting but didnât speak, waiting for him to say what he had to say, one hand on the door and one foot inside the car.
Leon shoved his hands into the pockets of his jacket, pursing his lips for a short moment before he found his voice again. âAnytime,â he said, the grin fading from his lips, âyouâre ready, Iâll be there to talk.â It was all he said before he leaned in to kiss my cheek, a familiar gesture from long before weâd become a couple.
But that was no longer what we were, was it?
I nodded. âI will let you know.â
His dark eyes lit up with a spark of hope. âIâll be waiting,â he said with more energy than before. âAnd if you need me ⦠for whatever reason ⦠let me know. Even if youâre not ready to talk about whatââhe paused and ran his hand through his hairââhappened.â
What heâd done, heâd meant to say. I could tell by the look in his eyes that he was trying to avoid bringing attention back to the reason for our fight.
But I wasnât really fighting with himâor with Cas or anyone for that matter. I was just empty, for now. The absence of yesterdayâs anger left nothing but hollowness behind.
âWeâre still on the same side ⦠I mean, weâll be summoned together, and weâll face Cas again, sooner or later, and bargain with him. And Iâll be there for you like I was before. Things havenât changed for me ⦠just because IâI made a mistake.â
âThanks, Leon.â I slid into the car seat and buckled up, steeling my spine against what I had to do. âBut I think I might be better off alone for a while.â
His face fell at my response.
As I shut the door and drove off, I was painfully aware that things would never be the same. Whether or not Iâd forgive Leon, I would never be the same again. And that meant that the naive bliss of that first relationship would be gone. Maybe it had been gone for a while. Even if Leon had invested enough feelings for both of us, I hadnât managed to speak those three little words. I love you. They were locked up somewhere inside of me, waiting to be freed.
I caught glimpses of Leon staring after me in the rearview mirror as I steered the car out of the parking lot and into the afternoon traffic. Despite everythingâdespite his involvement in losing my soul, he deserved a girl who loved him through and through. Someone who hadnât been condemned to an afterlife in Hell. Gnashing my teeth, I focused on the street in anticipation of a long weekend with nothing to do but ask Mom for more stories in the hope that she hadnât planned the entire weekend with her new man.
